The Mixtapes

If we still lived in the age of the cassette I’d lovingly put this together for you on a TDK and pop it through your letter box (if, that is, letter boxes are still a thing). Anyway, instead, mixtapes from my ears to yours are available on mixcloud, where there is no need to craft hand-written labels that demonstrate my love and affection. Mostly, these mixtapes are what I’ve been listening to during the week; new releases, tunes I’ve encountered for the first time, old favourites and stuff I’ve dredged up – you know the score, you’ve got your own music collection. Hope you enjoy. x

Extremely loud and incredibly close…

“He promised us that everything would be okay. I was a child, but I knew that everything would not be okay. That did not make my father a liar. It made him my father.” Jonathan Safran Foer – Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

A mixed bag of tunes that probably have very little to do with Father’s Day – but I’d like to see the old man sat in the garden, turning his nose up at all of these due to the lack of Glenn Miller and Acker Bilk, while having his annual bottle of Mackeson stout. Includes tracks by Django Django, Bruno Major, Coach Party, Goat, Gustavo Mota, Hand Habits, Marc Mosca, Meshell Ndegeocello, Minimal Schlager, Porij, Paul Baule, Sparklehorse and more (you might notice I’ve been watching The Gallows Pole).

Hot fun in the summertime…

It’s getting hot out there so here are some sweaty tunes to rub in your Factor 50 to, with tracks from Keg, This Is The Kit, Squid, Youth Lagoon, Ghost of Vroom, feeble little horse, BT, Paul Baule and more.

The future is real. The past is all made up…

As Logan Roy said, “The future is real. The past is all made up. Meeting over. F**k off.” A mixed bag of tunes including Nicholas Britell’s strings and 808 version of the Succession theme, Neutral Milk Hotel, Loyle Carner, new tracks from Dominik Eulberg, Bully, McKinley Dixon, Aisha Badru, W.I.T.C.H., Jaun Wauters and more.

Drawing from the well of conclusions…

“The past is not for living in; it is a well of conclusions from which we draw in order to act.”John Berger

A sack of tunes including GHEIST, Gia Margaret, Aikon, Audion, Leaving Laurel, Hudson Mohawke, Clark and more.

United by music…

United by music, a shared experience and a selection of tunes that includes Michna, Beta Librae, Ghost of Vroom, Guy J, Innellea, Overmono, Plaid, Alison Goldfrapp, Sofia Kourtesis, Amtrac, Bdrmm and more.

The place that you are now…

A selection of tunes to see in a bounteous, flowery May including Avalon Emerson, Innellea, Talaboman, Jessie Ware, Baby Rose, Skinny Pelembe, Joy Oladokun, Indigo de Souza, Wallice, Dove City, Klur and more.

Magnolia Trees and Flexi Sex…

A selection of tunes including Alfa Mist, Charles Oliver, Overmono, Lindstrøm, Easy Star All-Stars, Lael Neale, Esther Rose, Zombie Juice, St. Paul & The Broken Bones and more, along with some salacious excerpts from Jonny Trunk’s Flexi Sex compilation.

Connecting Points…

“The zero-degree parallel of latitude is fixed by the laws of nature, while the zero-degree meridian of longitude shifts like the sands of time…since time sets its own tempo, like a heartbeat or an ebb tide, time pieces don’t really keep time. They just keep up with it, if they’re able.” – Dava Sobel, Longitude.

A selection of tunes to navigate our way through time, including Fruit Bats, El Michels Affair, Abraham Alexander, Dave Okumu, Temples, The Tallest Man on Earth, Fenne Lily, Bonobo, Kyson, Thylacine, Shlohmo, Hypnagog, Rich Aucoin, Rone and more.
